After reaching the Semi-finals of the Division 2 cup on Saturday Aston were aiming to make it to the Quarter-finals of the Challenge trophy but to get there they would have to take another Premier scalp. Aston settled into their game early and started to pressure the Welwyn back four from the off with Roberts and Usmani causing lots of problems. With 22 minutes gone Powell opened the scoring volleying home from close range from a corner. Two minutes later another corner was headed back from the far post for Roberts to smash the ball home to make it 2-0. Just before the half Welwyn had a man sent off for a 2 footed challenge on Danny Bowden which wouldn't help their cause by the end of the game.
The 2nd half started as the first finished with Aston dominating the proceedings and with 47mins gone Roberts was put through and placed the ball calmly pass the keeper to make it 3-0. Usmani made it four on 53 mins tapping in from a cross. With 63 mins played Weirich fired one in to make it five form an excellent run and cross from O'sullivan. Aston switched off momentarily to give Welwyn a consolation goal from a penalty. But substitute Wollard finished off the rout poking one home from close range and volleying one in from another superb cross from O'sullivan. |
